Gandhiji's preachings/sayings were a direct result of his entire life. There's a reason to why he failed (prolly that's what he thought, as even though we got independence, the ensuing violence was something that definitely Gandhiji wouldn't have wanted).
The reason being, IMHO, that people followed his preachings/sayings blindly, without thinking that his ENTIRE life was like that and hence its easy for him to do whatever he says, but the common junta didn't have a life like that and as a result it was always going to be a tough act to follow.
If Gandhiji's son or wife would have been killed by a Muslim, he would have definitely not done anything to him, but common public is not like that, they just believe in "eye for an eye" motto. Also, the non-violence during pre-Independence took its toll on everyone and it had to come out sometime and it did, during and after Partition.
A similar analogy would be Jesus's life and death. After Jesus gave up his life on the cross, if people had started blindly following him and started giving their lives on crosses, do you think they would have become as great or as forgiving as Jesus. Yeah, I think the same, NOPE.
Its not possible to change overnight, the thoughts and your state of mind on your deathbed is the direct result of the life you have lived. The clarity of thought doesn't come instantly, it has to be tried and tested over your entire life span and that's when true GOLD comes out.
p.s. Read a book called "Nine Hours to Rama", about the nine hours leading to Gandhiji's assassination, from the point of view of all the people involved, mostly from the killer and plotters' pov. That book is responsible for the above thoughts !
