The same people who have held you in the highest regards in the past can start loathing you the very next day. And same people whom you have held in the highest regards can suddenly become loathsome.
That is karma or just the normal course of nature.
No need to look too much into it. No need to feel elated when someone praises you or when you are happy in someone's company. No need to feel down when someone criticizes you or when the same dear ones from earlier stop talking. This situation will happen, always ... only question is when. As it is inevitable no need to waste any energy trying to prevent it or correct it. Instead use the same energy and then some to understand why this happens, who is to blame and what can be done so that such a situation doesn't happen in the future.
This happens because I am considering myself something I am not; I am always to blame in any such scenario (whatever happened was justice, whoever suffers is at fault) ; and this can be avoided in the future by knowing who I really am.
