Any time while interacting with someone always think about the past of the relationship and also about its future. Think about when it started and how. Think about when will it probably end and how. After that if you still feel like investing time and energy into that relationship's every interaction then go ahead.
Chances are you won't feel like because relationships by nature are fleeting. They begin in order to end, whether one likes it or not.
Never let that bigger picture out of sight else one will suffer trying to please the other person and trying to save the relationship in every way possible however dishonest (to oneself) it might be. For every moment of happiness felt in a relationship, there are probably countless moments drenched in anxiety, restlessness (tangible/intangible) and fear.

Yes ... over-thinking is not helpful at all. Totally agreed. But unless we pause for thinking (at least what's necessary) the cycle of misery that we have so taken for granted will just continue as-is.
