You don't move away from someone, you move closer to someone else. That's always the case. I might feel that I am no longer in touch with my school friends, college friends, work friends, close/distant family members due to time constraints or distance constraints but it's almost always because I have consciously/subconsciously made that choice and now I am more comfortable with other people. That's the reason I am no longer in active touch with my older friends. If I really want to stay in touch with someone I will make sure I will do so.
This is the very reason I feel that one doesn't move away from someone ... one just moves closer to someone else. And move close he will as man is a social animal and he needs people around. So, the next time you feel bad that you are not in touch with older friends or certain family members, don't be. It is exactly how you wanted it to be and hence it is so as a result. You have found someone that you thought was probably seemingly/actually better and you have moved on as a result (seemingly/actually is something that you will be able to judge retroactively).
