What is so attractive about the past that I spend so much time in it? It doesn't return anything concrete, it elicits comparisons with the present and as a result makes me feel better/worse than what I actually am in the present for no genuine reason.
Checking a relationship from the past or my situation from the past doesn't help me in any way. It will either make me miserable (if that particular aspect or things in general were better then) OR make me happy (if things were at a low then). Of course this is all "notional" happiness/sadness as it doesn't involve "real" events. They used to be "real" events in the past when past was the present but for my current present they are nowhere close to "real".
Spending time in the past converts the present into the past without using the present effectively (of course the present is going to become the past anyways but at least it can be made use of in a constructive way). Living in present lets me react based on the "real" events happening within me.
Same of course for the future. Though the reason I am emphasizing right now on the past is because I spend more time there than the future. And of course none or very little in the present. Which is the main issue. And the source for all sadness and "notional" happiness. If lived in present then there is just happiness. The fleeting nature of every moment is realized. Also every moment is lived. Those two things form the pillars of happiness.
Nothing more is required.
Nothing more is yearned for.
Nothing more is desired.
Nothing more.
