Because expectations when met leads to even "stronger" expectations that next time around they will again be fulfilled again ... hence when the next time they are not met they will hurt even more.

Every met expectation just make the "bond" of expectations stronger and the sooner it is broken or made weak the lesser pain it brings when they finally stop being met ... and stop they will.
